IRT is a not-for-profit, community based, charitable organisation dedicated to meeting the changing needs of older Australians. Established in 1969, we now provide accommodation, care and services to 5,000 residents and clients between Sydney, ACT, Illawarra and the South Coast of NSW.

Our core business is providing accommodation and care within our purpose built communities and villages, however we also provide vital care and support to people in their own homes. For 40 years IRT has built experience and knowledge in highly specialised service divisions, enabling us to cater for the diverse needs of our clients.

Corporate History

IRT was incorporated as a company on 14 November 1969 with the first meeting of its members held on 16 December 1969.

Diment Towers was IRT's first low residential care (hostel) and self care village, completed in July 1971. The construction of the first high residential care village (nursing home) at Towradgi commenced just over a year later in September 1972.

From these first Villages onwards IRT has developed a wide range of accommodation and care services, and was subsequently selected for pilot programs by the Department of Health and Ageing for Community Aged Care Packages (1992), Extended Aged Care at Home (1998) services and Extended Aged Care at Home with Dementia (2005).

IRT has worked hard to earn the reputation as one of Australia's leading and innovative aged care organisations. With locations throughout Sydney, ACT, Illawarra and the South Coast of NSW, IRT has today become the largest not-for-profit, community based, retirement living and aged care provider in Australia* (BRW November 2008).
