Grants for Research into medical sciences to benefit older people in 2010

Researchers working in Australia in fields that are relevant to older people are invited to apply for funding to support research in the calendar year 2010.
Expressions of Interest must reach the IRT Research Foundation Committee by 5pm Friday, 30 October 2009 in order to be considered in the funding allocation for 2010. Late EOIs will not be considered.
In general, the proposal should be consistent with the standards of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
The initial shortlist for funding decisions will be made by the IRT Research Foundation Committee at a Grants Allocation Meeting to be held in November 2009. At this time, those shortlisted for grants may be requested to provide further information to assist with the final decision on the allocation of grants.
The IRT Research Foundation
The IRT Research Foundation regards its role as one of providing funding for research that is innovative and having a clear relationship to the causes, treatments and cures for issues impacting older people as well as for the support of older people and their carers in our communities.
This is the first year the IRT Research Foundation has offered such grants and the Committee anticipates the grants will be of a value of up to $40,000 however all EOIs will be assessed in line with the criteria.
Application for funding
EOIs should be written so that:
• a brief project summary is included;
• the aims of the research are clear to the Research Committee;
• the aims are relevant to the development of an understanding of the causes, treatments or cures of issues impacting older people or the support of older people and their carers in our communities;
• the hypotheses on which the research is based are explained in terms of the current theories about these causes, treatments or cures;
• the people who will be doing the research are identified
i. by their role in the research, and
ii. by a brief (no longer than one A4 page) but adequate CV for each person (including the principal investigator). Publication lists should be limited to the past five years
iii. relevant research into similar fields is included (if applicable);
• the value of the Grant sought is included;
• adequate justification is provided for the requested funding including what the funding will be used for (eg. equipment, salaries);
• the EOI is concise (maximum 2 pages) and to the point;
• other proposed sources of funding to support the project are disclosed.
Applications incorporating co-funding from other sources will be viewed favourably.
Applicants will provide a brief statement, understandable by lay people, about how the research might improve our understanding of the issues impacting older people as well as for the support of older people and their carers in our communities.

Please ensure the EOI is forwarded via Word or PDF format.
Successful applicants will be expected to publish their findings in an appropriate professional journal and to provide two brief progress reports during the year for inclusion in the IRT Research Foundation’s web site and newsletter to IRT’s residents, clients, staff and general committee, the local communities, carers, and others who provide the funds.
