Community Housing Provider
In May 2009 IRT was accepted as a Community Housing Provider in NSW. This enables IRT to make available affordable accommodation to those seniors within our community with low incomes, or who are unable to access appropriate housing in the private market.
As a seniors lifestyle and care provider with Community Housing Provider status, IRT runs various programs seeking to assist older people experiencing circumstances that may disadvantage their ability to access care, services and accommodation.
This includes:
- Assistance for homeless seniors and those at risk of homelessness through the Assistance with Care & Housing for the Aged Services (ACHA);
- The management and servicing of social housing units at our Gunyah Community;
- The provision of independent living places subsidised by the Federal Government’s National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).
Assistance with Care & Housing for the Aged Service (ACHA)
Funded by the Department of Health & Ageing, Assistance with Care & Housing for the Aged Service (ACHA) assists financially disadvantaged seniors with their accommodation and support needs, allowing them to remain in the community.
IRT’s administration of the ACHA program in the Illawarra seeks to advocate on behalf of seniors for fair and equitable access to lifestyle and care services for ouir many clients who are either homeless or at risk of homelessness.
ACHA assists in areas such as:
- Assistance and advice in accessing housing services and related financial and legal services
- Help with removal arrangements, settling in or negotiating to improve accommodation
- Arranging services to assist with daily living and health needs
- Linking to relevant local community supports to improve quality of life
- Support with government departments
IRT provides ongoing contact and support with seniors who they assist via ACHA and monitor the effectiveness of the services provided. However, independence is encouraged once they have established a relationship with appropriate service providers are established.
Gunyah
The accommodation at Gunyah is provided by the Department of Housing and managed by IRT through our Supported Housing Initiatives Program.
The Supported Housing Initiatives Program links ACHA clients that are eligible for Department of Housing accommodation to housing with support services, such as Gunyah, if they are required.
Gunyah residents receive ongoing support through ACHA services and IRT.
