IRT and TAFE Illawarra join forces in a garden project
7 November 2011
The success of a joint project between IRT and 14 pre-vocational students from TAFE Illawarra’s Wollongong Campus will be celebrated on Tuesday, 8 November.
The students, who are completing a Certificate II in Construction (Pathways), were given the opportunity to construct six mobile raised garden beds for IRT William Beach Gardens in Kanahooka, as part of a community garden project.
According to IRT Lifestyle Services Manager Nia Briguglio the project was a great success and of benefit to the residents and students.
“The project gave the students an opportunity to put their skills into practice and in turn the residents have some lovely garden beds,” she said.
IRT Chief Executive Nieves Murray said the project partnership benefited both organisations.
To say thank you to the students and TAFE Illawarra, IRT William Beach Gardens will host a sausage sizzle on 8 November from 10.30am -11.30am.
Nia said at the sausage sizzle the students would get to meet the residents and plant some seedlings in the garden beds.
Richard Twist, Head Teacher of Building and Construction said: “We used the project to incorporate joinery skills and the use of hand tools, power tools and static machines. The students have put a lot of pride into the project as they have made something that will benefit the community.”
“All the students in the course are seeking apprenticeships in shop fitting, joinery or kitchen manufacturing and they have all completed work placement as part of the course,” he added.
The students also had to consider the ergonomics of the planter boxes as wheelchair accessibility was an important criteria.
