IRT Sarah Claydon seniors get connected

Seniors at IRT Sarah Claydon are becoming tech savvy thanks to a collaboration between the IRT Community and the Community Technology Centre (CTC) in Ulladulla.
IRT Area Manager – Southern Shoalhaven Cheree Howe said residents at IRT Sarah Claydon had shown an interest in learning about PCs and CTC was looking for interested groups.
“Our participants include low care residents from the Care Centre and independent living residents from the Lifestyle Community,” Cheree said. “What was going to be a short course has grown into an open-ended activity, meaning that as long as the interest is there the group will continue.”
The IRT Sarah Claydon Lifestyle Manager organises transport for the group members each Monday and arrangements have been made for residents to attend and use the facility’s resources whenever they wish.
CTC Technology Trainer Sue Parton said the residents were learning basic computer skills. “They will soon be emailing their loved ones, researching on the internet, and using programs such as Skype to connect to friends and family members all over the world,” Sue said. “The once-a-week program is ongoing – there’s always something new to learn!”
Sue explained the idea for the IRT Sarah Claydon Group grew from its popular CTC Seniors PC Group which is held once a month, and addresses the need for computer support for seniors in the region.
