Seniors' Stories to be Presented at IRT St Georges Basin
14 September 2011
Students from Vincentia High School will present the digital biographies of seven seniors from IRT St Georges Basin to residents and their families at a presentation on Wednesday, September 21.
The 12 students have been working with the seniors since early August to create their oral histories as part of IRT’s ‘My Story Matters’ program.
The students have interviewed the seniors, recorded their reminiscences in written journals, added images and music and will now share the stories at the presentation to be held at IRT St Georges Basin.
IRT Area Manager Southern Shoalhaven, Cheree Howe said the ‘My Story Matters’ program provides seniors with a wonderful opportunity to share stories with the younger generation.
“Seniors have great value to add to our society and the ‘My Story Matters’ program allows our residents to share their wisdom with local students,” she said.
The program presents students with the opportunity to develop their communication skills, gain an understanding of another era, and learn about careers in the aged care industry. The program also has a number of benefits for the seniors participating.
“The ‘My Story Matters’ program can assist with depression and anxiety and result in improved sleep patterns, increased engagement with staff and other residents, a reduction in medication use, enhanced cognitive functioning and a stronger sense of community and belonging,” Ms Howe said.
Representatives of the media are invited to attend the ‘My Story Matters’ presentation, to be held between 9am and 12 noon on Wednesday, September 21 at IRT St Georges Basin, corner Loralyn Ave and Meriton St, St Georges Basin.
