If you’re over 50 years of age and homeless or at risk of homelessness, it’s harder for you to find suitable accommodation. This is because most housing services are geared towards young people.

Even when re-housed into appropriate affordable accommodation, seniors who have faced homelessness may need ongoing support to help them get back on their feet.

We need more housing, health and wellbeing services for older Australians to help them combat disadvantage, and we need to make those services accessible and right for them.

Improving outcomes

We’re using our experience as an Assistance with Care and Housing program provider to improve outcomes for older people.

Matching clients with affordable age-friendly housing is just the first step. Supporting them to settle in and connect with their community is critical over the short to medium term. Without this support, clients may become homeless again.

We work with local service providers to arrange household goods, transport, employment, meal delivery and home care, just to name a few.

Co-designing new services

We’ve partnered with Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Community and Medical Service to co-design and deliver a new service for elders.

With $1.4 million in funding support from the Australian Government and in-kind support from IRT at Home and IRT Academy, we’ll work together to enable elders to live in their own homes for longer.

This pilot program is designed to address the gap in service delivery to Indigenous people in regional communities.

Building community

IRT Foundation is working with governments, service providers and researchers to design models that empower vulnerable seniors to regain independence and connect to their communities.

We previously invested almost $400,000 in more than 41 community programs combating disadvantage and improving outcomes for older people at a grassroots level.

We’re also developing a referral network of trusted providers for our clients. We want to do more than put a roof over people’s heads. We want to help them actively participate, improve their health and be part of a community.
