Important information about IRT Diment Towers Aged Care Centre

9 June 2022

Dear family member/resident representative,

I am writing to let you know that a number of our residents are experiencing symptoms consistent with parainfluenza and we are awaiting test results for confirmation.

Their symptoms include cough, sore throat and runny nose and we are monitoring them closely as we care for them in their rooms. We have notified the local public health unit and are consulting with resident GPs regarding any intervention treatments that may be necessary such as the antiviral medication, Tamiflu.

While this risk of influenza remains high in the care centre we have strongly encouraged all residents to avoid moving about the care centre, and we would appreciate your support in their decision to stay in their room.

All residents will be tested today for the common viruses associated with respiratory symptoms including COVID-19. Our Registered Nurse, Dior Todd will be conducting the tests which will be sent off site for analysis.

The Lifestyle team will ensure residents have access to activities of interest and will provide assistance where needed to connect with family and friends by phone or video calls.

As parainfluenza is a respiratory virus, a range of infection control protocols have been introduced to reduce the risk of it spreading further throughout the aged care centre, and your loved one may notice staff wearing additional PPE.

Visiting arrangements during outbreak conditions

As we are currently managing an outbreak of respiratory infection I encourage you to reconsider your need to visit your loved one at this time. If you do continue with your plans to visit please note that the following arrangements apply:

  • Children under 12 years of age are not permitted to visit.
  • Residents will be permitted 2 visitors only by appointment.
  • All visitors will be asked to show proof of a negative rapid antigen test and before entering the care centre.
  • All visitors will be asked to wear all necessary PPE while in the care centre including a P2/N95 mask and a face shield which will be provided on entry.
  • If you are visiting a resident who is currently unwell with respiratory infection you may be asked to wear a gown and instructed on how to dispose of it safely.
  • Please assist staff by complying with all requirements to wear PPE.

Please do not visit if you are unwell yourself with even the mildest symptoms. Even if you have tested negative for COVID-19 you may still have influenza which is also highly contagious.

If you have any questions please contact your Care Manager.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Walsh
