Howard Court at IRT Pioneer Place residents come together to sing ‘I am Australian’

COVID-19 has dramatically changed the way we all live and our retirement village residents are no exception.

For the past month or so, residents at Howard Court at IRT Pioneer Place have self-isolated within the comforts of their home to reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19. To maintain a social connection with their neighbours, the residents stepped out onto their balconies for a group sing-a-long to ‘I am Australian’ by Bruce Woodley of The Seekers and Dobe Newton of The Bushwackers.

Many of our residents took the opportunity to wave Australian flags, dress up and raise a toast to their neighbours from a safe distance.

Resident David Coates spoke to ABC Illawarra about rehearsing and enjoying the ability to reconnect with his friends. “Normally we get to see lots of people all the time, now we only see one or two, and so it was nice to see everyone at once,” he said.

“We needed some brightness in these dull days.”
