Traffic management upgrades at IRT Macarthur

29 May 2023

Dear family member/resident representative,

I’m writing to let you know about some upcoming work we’ll be undertaking at IRT Macarthur.

Background

Following a traffic incident that occurred late last year, we engaged an independent consultant to conduct a detailed assessment of pedestrian movements, traffic flow, heavy vehicle access and waste management at IRT Macarthur.

As a result of this assessment, the consultant has recommended some upgrades to:

  • improve pedestrian movement across the site
  • further slow-down traffic and improve its flow throughout the site
  • reduce the volume of traffic that is unnecessarily entering internal driveways before exiting the site
  • create a safer movement of waste removal vehicles across the site.

Details of the work

Work on the traffic management upgrades is expected to start on Tuesday 13 June 2023 and will take approximately three weeks to complete, weather permitting.

The work will include:

  • installing more visible pedestrian crossings, including two wombat (raised) pedestrian crossings to slow traffic as it enters the site, and two painted pedestrian crossings onto the existing tarmac (see Plan A here)
  • signage upgrades and repainting of existing road line markings
  • changing the direction of on-site traffic flow (see Plan B here)
  • additional fencing, a reduction of the length of the median strip at the entry to site, an additional median strip near the Community Room, and a new car wash bay (see Plan C here).

What does this mean for you and your loved one?

All work will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. We do not expect any work to take place on weekends or public holidays, however, if the weather has impacted the proposed schedule, some work may occur on weekends to catch-up.

The only other after-hours work scheduled to take place is the line marking on the final day. This will begin at 8pm and will only take a few hours to complete.

While the work is taking place, there may be some occasional noise and temporary changes to traffic conditions throughout the site as follows:

  • Work on Tuesday 13 June will require the use of a concrete saw which can be noisy. Contractors will complete all the concrete saw work on this day to minimise the noise made during the remainder of the works.
  • All work will be conducted under ‘stop/go’ traffic management in order to direct the flow of the traffic.
  • One lane of the entry into the site will be worked on at a time to allow entry/exit via the other side of the road.
  • Access for emergency services and visitors will be maintained at all times.

If you plan to visit your loved one during this time, we kindly ask that you; are mindful of any temporary signage that is put in place, follow all traffic rules and speed limits, and take extra caution when travelling around the site.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience these upgrades may cause you or your loved one and we will do our best to ensure we minimise the disruption to residents, employees and visitors where possible.

Please pass this message on to others as you consider appropriate and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Care Manager.

Thank you for your support.

Kind regards

Belinda Pheeney
