Peakhurst Seniors Showcase Art from the Heart
An exhibition of paintings by seniors living in the Peakhurst community opens at the Bonnet Centre at IRT Peakhurst Retirement Village next month.
Called Art from the Heart, the exhibition will feature approximately 40 paintings that have been lovingly created by a group of women attending a weekly art therapy class held at IRT Peakhurst.
IRT Group Executive General Manager – Retirement Villages, Stig Andersen says the art class has been a great success since it was first introduced to residents a year ago.
“The residents really enjoy the class and we get a great turn out each week,” Mr Andersen said.
“It’s more than just an art class. It’s a chance for people to connect with one another, talk, make friends and have a laugh. There’s a lot of satisfaction to be gained from the process of creating something too, no matter your skill level.”
Mr Andersen explains that the opportunity for the art class came about when a former visual arts teacher undertook a work placement at IRT Peakhurst. Now a care worker, the former teacher runs the two-hour art class every Thursday morning.
“People who engage in art therapy when they’re older can experience a range of physical, cognitive and psychological benefits,” Mr Andersen said.
“We’re proud to be able to facilitate such an engaging art class for our residents – and we’ve uncovered some real hidden talent within our community too.”
The art exhibition will be on display from 4 July to 11 July 2019. A special morning tea will mark the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 4 July from 10am – 12pm. All are welcome to attend and appreciate the paintings, meet the artists and enjoy some homemade scones, sandwiches and champagne.
A gold coin donation will be taken at the door and one painting from each of the artists will be up for auction with all proceeds to be donated to cancer research.
