Why volunteer with IRT?

IRT has a large volunteer network and volunteering is a great experience to meet new people, learn new skills and make new friends while making a difference. The IRT Volunteer program is to enrich the lives of older Australians through meaningful connections. Our volunteers play a valuable role in supporting our mission and values.

If you wish to express an interest in volunteering with us, please submit an Expression of Interest Application. We encourage you to also review our current volunteer vacancies, which are regularly advertised on the Careers Page of our website.

What happens after I submit an Expression of Interest application?

Your expression of interest application will be forwarded to the relevant manager at the location(s) you have specified and they will contact you if there is a current volunteer vacancy that matches your area of interest.

If contacted, you will offered the opportunity to meet with the manager to discuss the volunteer vacancies in more detail and to tour the facility. If you then decide to take up volunteering with us, you will be provided with a volunteer application to complete.

Note: The volunteer application includes a police check and may include other compliance checks depending upon the volunteer role.

What if I already have other commitments at set times of the week?

That is not a problem. This can be discussed when you meet with the manager to review the volunteer role. We will do everything we can to make sure the volunteering arrangement works well for everyone involved.

What is a police check?

This is a Federal Police check processed by IRT’s provider ‘National Crime Check’ (NCC) upon successful employment or volunteer engagement.

Why do I need to do a police check?

The Commonwealth Government requires all approved Aged Care providers to ensure their employees and volunteers undergo a National Police History Check at commencement of engagement and then every three years thereafter.

What information do I need to provide about my identity for the police check?

You will need 100 points of identification and 5 years of residential address details to complete the online form. Please note these documents do not need to be signed by a Justice of the Peace.

Note: If a volunteer has a current Australian police certificate, IRT will accept this if it is verifiable and no more than three months old from issue.

Do I need to pay for my police check?

No. All volunteers submit a police check online through NCC and IRT pays NCC directly for the cost of the check.

What training will I get?

You will be enrolled in the IRT online induction training once your volunteer application is processed. You may wish to start this whilst you await the clearance of your police check.

You may commence your volunteering prior to completing this induction training, however we ask that you complete the training within four weeks of commencement.

Please do not worry about your performance in the training, as it will not prevent you from volunteering with us. The training is designed to support you and make you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteer role. It also assists us to better support you in your role.

Your contact person will provide you with an orientation on your first day, which will include meeting the IRT team and getting to know the facility and residents where you will be volunteering. This provides a great opportunity to settle in to your new role.

What if my situation changes and I can’t volunteer in the same way?

That is not a problem. Please let us know as soon as possible and we will discuss with you other options, and/or organise for someone else to undertake the volunteering activity instead.
