Home Care Package costs explained

A Home Care Package is an allocation of funds from the Government which can be used by senior Australians over the age of 65 to receive the help they need to live their best life at home. Once you’re allocated a Home Care Package and have selected your preferred provider, the provider will then use the funds from the package (sometimes referred to as a government subsidy) to deliver the services you need.

Your approved provider will help you develop a tailored care plan for your needs and the fees for the services will be deducted from the Home Care Package amount each month. Any unspent funds are rolled over from month to month and full details of all monthly transactions are detailed on a monthly statement issued to you.

The Government also expects you to make a personal contribution which will vary depending on your personal circumstances, the type of package you have been allocated, and the level of help you need.

For more information on how a Home Care Package works give us a call on 134 478, we’d be happy to help.

What is the personal contribution?

Depending on your personal circumstances your personal contribution will be based on the following:

  • The Basic Daily Fee (BDF) which all customers with a Home Care Package are expected to pay. The BDF is capped at 17.5% of the Full Single Aged Pension.
  • The Income Tested Fee (ITF) which is a means tested fee based on your income and assets. The government will make an assessment as part of gaining a Home Care Package and they will advise you and your approved provider if you‘re required to pay an ITF. The amount of your ITF is usually reassessed every three months and you will be advised if there is a change.

From your Home Care Package and the personal contribution, IRT will deduct the following:

The package management fee covers the administrative costs of providing high quality home care services to you. Our focus is doing our job better through investing in our staff and technology, and the continual improvement and development of our home care services that we provide to you.

Care Management fees contribute to your individual Care Management visits and regular contact with your Care Manager. A Care Manager will help you navigate the My Aged Care system, to successfully obtain a Home Care Package and apply for future package upgrades. They will also help you: develop and maintain regular ongoing care plans; organise additional services or purchases; liaise with your family and decision makers; and coordinate the timing of your home care services by our care team.

IRT can provide you with services to assist you with everyday living such as domestic cleaning, garden maintenance and assistance with cooking as well as personal care and grooming, transport to important appointments, and much more.

Products and consumable goods that can support you to live at home may be purchased through your home care budget and may include aids and equipment or security / safety devices. Your Case Manager can provide you with a detailed overview of what can and cannot be purchased with their Home Care Package funds.
