Funding and package options

A range of home care services are supported by the Commonwealth Government to encourage more Australians to stay in their own home. We are a community owned provider approved for the following types of funding:

Home Care Packages

If you’re approved for funding, the government pays your home care package provider a subsidy to arrange a package of care services to meet your needs.

The level you’re allocated depends on your individual needs and how much support you require to remain independent at home. Depending on which level of Home Care Package you’re approved for, choose from any of the specialist services listed above.

Commonwealth Home Support Programme

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is an entry-level form of home care funding that aims to help those who need a low level of support to keep living independently at home.

Only recommended to those who need one or two services, CHSP can be a great way of getting immediate support while waiting for Home Care Package funding.

Department of Veterans' Affairs

Some of the services listed above can be accessed through the Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) Program.

How to apply for home care in Canberra
and get your ACAT assessment

Check your eligibility and apply

Contact My Aged Care to register and find out if you are eligible for Australian Government funded aged care services. They'll then refer you to your local Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) for a face-to-face assessment to discuss your care needs.

You will also need to arrange an income and asset assessment to calculate how much you can afford to contribute towards the cost of your aged care services. This is used to determine how much funding you receive for care services.

Receive your assessment outcome

After your face-to-face assessment at your home or hospital, you'll receive a letter from ACAT with your results.

This letter will indicate if you've been approved for residential aged care, the level of care you'll receive, your referral code for these services and a personalised care plan.

Find your home care provider

Once you've been approved for home care services, it's time to find a home care service provider that suits your needs in terms of location, services and availability. Feel free to contact us to discuss things such as your culture and language options and our empathetic and experienced staff who will care for your needs.

If you have chosen IRT as the provider that best meets your needs, we will work with you to develop a plan based on your care needs, goals and what is important to you.

Frequently asked questions

Home care is a support service for seniors who need assistance with daily care and household tasks to keep living independently and safely in their own homes.

Whether it’s help with domestic duties such as cooking and cleaning or simply warm companionship, home care offers personal, physical or emotional support that empowers you to keep living independently at home.

Customers receive services based on their specific needs and individual care plan. This might include assistance with daily activities such as showering or personal hygiene, and they can also receive medical care from registered nurses and allied health professionals.

The instinct for many is to remain at home for as long as possible and seek assistance from family. With time, however, it can become increasingly difficult to manage daily living and relying heavily on family for help can become taxing for everyone. If you or your loved one is struggling to perform daily activities or is suffering from isolation, it might be time to consider home care.

There are a few common signs that you or your loved one may need to consider home care:

  • You’re having a difficult time managing with daily activities or household tasks, including cooking, cleaning and getting dressed
  • Your home is messy or unclean
  • Your family in unable to provide you with the level of support required
  • You’ve lost your driver licence and can’t go on social outings anymore or do the groceries
  • You’re having falls and daily tasks, such as watering the garden, are difficult without tripping.

Home care is a highly beneficial service that can empower you or your loved one to keep living independently at home and enjoying a higher quality of life. It offers the support you need with daily activities such as cooking or cleaning without relying on family for assistance.

Home care can also help you maintain hobbies and interests that have become more difficult, and can even help alleviate feelings of isolation through warm companionship and connection.

Benefits of home care include:

  • You have choice and control over the care you would like to receive
  • You or your loved one will receive personalised care tailored to your needs
  • Home care helps you keep your independence and allows you to keep doing the things you love

Whether you need a little bit of assistance, or a lot, you can trust our experienced home care staff to understand you and meet your needs.

How much you pay for home care depends on the type of care you need, the provider you choose, your individual financial circumstances and the services you receive. The Australian Government helps pay for home care services for eligible people.

At IRT, we make it easy for you to understand your home care costs. Whether you are receiving government support or wish to pay for your services privately we have put together an easy to use guide which explains costs, options available to you and eligibility for government support. Learn more.

There are several factors to take into consideration when choosing a home care provider, including the level of care required, services offered, provider background and staff.

There’s no doubt that making the decision to get extra support at home can be difficult. It can be an emotional time for you and your loved ones and concerns can come up. The best way to make a good decision is to visit several aged care centres to compare them and get a feel for them. Ask the questions that are relevant to your needs, listen carefully to the responses and keenly observe what is happening around you.
