Frequently asked questions

For those studying in a classroom/virtual classroom environment :

  • Approximately 6-8 hours of home study per week plus classroom hours (classroom hours does not apply to students enrolled in self-directed learning mode for this qualification)
  • An online learning resource and assessment pack will be provided and pre-reading is essential before attending classes.

For all students:

  • You will have access to regularly scheduled virtual support sessions known as homework tables. At these sessions, we will have a trainer online and available to step you through key course topics and to answer questions/support needs you may have.

Like choosing any area of study the choice is a personal one for you to make. Aged care is a rapidly expanding industry where demand for workers continues to be high as the Australian population ages.

We offer year-round enrolment with multiple intake periods each year. Check the course page to find out the next enrolment dates.

For this course, we also offer anytime enrolment where you can start when it suits you and study it as a self-directed course.

No, there are no prerequisites for this course.

  • 10-12 months (self-directed) – online, work placement and scheduled practical sessions
  • 10-12 months (blended) – virtual classes/sessions (16), work placement and scheduled practical sessions
  • Practical sessions will be scheduled in advance and may be conducted in Wollongong, Sydney and other IRT locations in Southern NSW and ACT.

Yes, 120 hours of work placement is required in an aged care centre. IRT Academy will assist in organising work placement but can’t guarantee work placement in areas where IRT does not have an aged care centre.
