Dear family member/resident representative,
I am writing to let you know that the Australian Government has introduced a new Aged Care Code of Conduct which goes into effect today.
This new industry code complements existing regulation which we already adhere to including the Aged Care Quality Standards and the Charter of Aged Care Rights. It is also very similar in spirit to our own Employee Code of Conduct which applies to all of our employees and volunteers.
The introduction of this code is an outcome of the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. It places a personal responsibility on each individual employee to always conduct themselves in ways that are consistent with the code.
The code applies to: everyone you see in our aged care centres and home care teams; our maintenance and garden workers; onsite contractors; head office employees; our executive leadership team including our CEO, and our Board of Directors.
The purpose of the code is to ensure that every individual employee acts with integrity, honesty and transparency and in ways that treats people with dignity and respect; valuing their diversity.
More information about the code can be found on the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission website and in this FAQ document.
An information webinar is also being held by Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN). This webinar will discuss what reforms are already underway (including the code of conduct) and what they mean for older people.
