Vaccination and visiting your loved one’s
aged care centre

24 March 2022

Dear family member/resident representative,

By now you’re probably well aware that vaccination against COVID-19 has proven to be effective in preventing serious illness from the virus in tens of thousands of people and has saved many lives.

With cases continuing at high numbers across the broader community, our own experience in our aged care centres has seen a number of our residents test positive.

While some have experienced only very mild symptoms, sadly we have lost a small number of residents after they tested positive. We can’t know for sure if COVID-19 was the direct cause of their passing, but it is widely accepted that the virus can still be dangerous for our most vulnerable.

For this reason, our federal and state governments have now mandated the booster for all those who work in an aged care centre. This includes all trainers, maintenance staff and volunteers. Those who are fully vaccinated with a booster have a reduced risk of serious illness and are at less risk of passing the virus to others.

Have you received your COVID-19 booster?

While our governments have not yet mandated the COVID-19 booster for those who visit an aged care centre, it is strongly encouraged and I urge you to consider boosting your immunity.

By doing so you will not only improve your own immune response if you contract the virus, but you will also reduce the risk of you passing it on to your loved one or others when you visit them.

Have you planned for your flu shot?

As the influenza season gets closer, I would also encourage you to get your flu shot. In past years, this has been mandated by government for anyone visiting an aged care centre and we are anticipating directions for this year to be issued soon. As with the COVID-19 booster the vaccine will improve your defence against serious illness from influenza, and also reduce your chance of passing it on to those around you.

Thank you for your support

Thank you for your ongoing support and for considering the protection of your loved one with vaccination. We remain focussed on ensuring the health and safety of all residents while balancing their need for social interaction and connection with their family and friends.

There are no changes to our current visiting arrangements which can be viewed here.

Regardless of your vaccination status please do not visit your loved one if you are experiencing any symptoms or are feeling unwell, even if the symptoms are mild.

The efforts of staff to care for your loved one during this challenging time are made easier, knowing they have your support.

Yours sincerely,

Nia Briguglio
